Having vowed never again to take up a biwa plectrum, I made an offering of the instrument GoSaga had given me to the god Hachiman, presenting it along with some of my father’s letters, on the backs of which I had copied out sections of the Lotus Sutra. I tied the letters in a bundle and wrote on the wrapper:

Resolved never again
To pluck these strings,
I offer them with sutras
Written over traces of his brush. [2.11]
