At dawn I received a letter from the Madenokōji senior counselor Moroshige, who wrote: “I am given to understand that you are nearby. How did you feel last night?” I responded with this poem:

Shrilling insects and the moon,
Parts of a lingering sadness—
His visage in the cloudless night. [5.27]
