Their kindness would be hard to forget.

The gods descend to earth for all mankind:
What kindness you who serve the gods
Have shown toward a moss-cloaked nun.
I wrote this on a scrap of prayer paper, attached it to a branch of sacred sakaki, and sent it to the priests, who replied:
Know that we who dwell
Deep in the shade of holy cedars
Share the blessings of the gods with all. [4.22]
